Social media isn’t the enemy. The way you use it is.
This email contains a big announcement 🥁🥁🥁
There was a time I gave all of social media up.
I was tired of feeling so guilty after unplanned sessions of scrolling.
So, I stepped away. Cold turkey.
At first, it was hard. Then, it felt amazing.
But after a while, I took on a challenge. I tried something different.
Instead of consuming, I started creating.
And that changed everything.
Turns out I was wrong.
The problem isn’t social media itself.
It’s how we use it. Or more often, how it uses us.
Numbers Don’t Lie
Take a moment and read these stats, slowly.
The average person spends 2.5 hours/day on social media.
Gen Z? Over 4 hours (and rising rapidly)
70% of people check their phone within 10 minutes of waking up.
And nearly 90% of social media browsing happens on mobile…
These numbers might seem “normal” BUT THEY’RE WILDLY NOT!
Let’s say you’re in your 30s. You scroll for ~2 hours a day.
If nothing changes, you’ll spend nearly 4 years of your life on social media by the time you’re 100. (yes, I believe you can live that long!)
That’s enough time to:
Visit 4 new countries
Write a book
Learn a language
Crazy! But… it’s not your fault.
Social media is engineered to keep you hooked.
So, I decided to do something about it:
🥁🥁🥁 unhookd
I am building an iOS app called unhookd!
It’s a tool to help you scroll with intention, without quitting cold turkey or deleting your apps.
How? It gives you control to:
✅ Set time windows when social apps are available
🔒 Lock them by default
⏳ Create a daily budget that actually works
🤏 Use a simple override system when you need flexibility
It flips the script. So instead of “trying to use less,” you use it on your terms.
Bottom Line
If you’ve ever caught yourself closing Instagram and thinking:
“Wait… what did I even do for the last 45 minutes?”
This is for you.
unhookd is the first step in a much bigger mission of mine, to build human-health-centered tech. Tech that serves us, not the other way around.
